  • Hops (Humulus Lupulus) - Hops are of course widely known as an ingredient for beer making but it has been used the world over in many traditional medicine systems as a sedative to treat anxiety, tension, restlessness and insomnia for more than a 1000 years ever. Traditionally used in pillows or a sachet of hops was placed beneath or inside a pillow to aid sleep, hops acts by releasing a strong aroma that calms the mind. Its ability to induce sleep has now been widely studied and one of the better known and studied components is a compound called methyl-butenol which has been shown to have a sedating effect on the central nervous system. The bitter acids and lupulin, a resinous compound found in the flowers, have also been shown to promote sleep and reduce nervousness and irritation. Recent in vitro studies have shown hops to influence the activity of melatonin, the hormone responsible for maintaining our diurnal circadium rhythm, as well as GABA a neurotransmitter believed to help control anxiety.
  • Lavender (Lavandula officinalis) - Rich in essential essential oils, has long been used for its soothing and calming effect and to help promote restful sleep. • Lemon Balm (Melissa Officinalis) - Long known to raise the spirits and comfort the heart lemon balm is so called due to its lemony smell and taste. Rich in essential oils which have calming properties, lemon balm has long been considered a trophorestorative for the nervous system. As a relaxing tonic it has been used traditionally to treat anxiety, tension, restlessness and irritability, and also very useful when anxiety causes digestive upset or IBS symptoms. More recently the sedative properties have been widely researched and it is believed these properties may be in part due to citral and limonene, two of the most abundant constituents which have been shown to have an effect on GABA a neurotransmitter shown to help reduce stress.
  • Rose (Rosa Damascena) - with a has a long history of medicinal use particularly in the Middle East to help heal nervous tension, depression and grief. There has been an increasing interest in rose in recent years and a great number of studies have been performed to evaluate the effect of rose extracts on the  to help  effects been shown. Research has shown the flowers to possess a potent antidepressant, hypnotic and anti-anxiety activity and to significantly increase sleeping time with results comparable to diazepam. The medicinal functions of the rose family are partly attributed to their abundance of flavonoid and phenolic compounds which possess a wide range of pharmacological activities.
  • Oat Straw (Avena Sativa) - One of our most ancient and nutritive foods, oats have been eaten since prehistoric times. The oat straw is the green oat grass and tops in the "milky" stage before the mature oat grains form a head. In the past oat straw was used to fill mattresses. Traditionally oat straw has been considered one of the most important plant medicines for helping to restore the nervous system and used to treat a wide range of nervous conditions. It is used to help promote and maintain a restful nights sleep, alleviate insomnia as well as nervous exhaustion.
