Ethically sourced from Afghanistan, Wunderworkshop Golden Saffron or "red gold" as it's known, is renowned to have many health benefits and recent studies have found it useful as an antioxidant.
This high-grade Golden Saffron holds a powerful aroma that is a great addition to both sweet and savoury dishes, the vibrant yellow colour adds delight to simple rice dishes and also in baking.
A small pinch of saffron is enough to bring life to any dish.
Wunderworkshop is working directly with a smallholding farm and social enterprise in Herat, Afghanistan, to promote and create sustainable value chains for their high-grade Golden Saffron.
This project is working in partnership with The Ethical Fashion Initiative (EFI), which is a flagship programme of the International Trade Centre, a joint agency of the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation that is funded by the European Union.
Golden Saffron grown in Herat is proving a vital source of legitimate employment in the country by replacing the cultivation of lucrative but illegal opium poppies - in particular for women, who typically have fewer opportunities to earn an income in these rural areas.
Add a small pinch of saffron to create Golden Saffron Milk, add to simple rice dishes, or use in baking.
Recipe for Golden Saffron Milk (makes 2 servings):
Gently warm the milk in a pan, stirring regularly. Grind the saffron in a pestle & mortar, add this to the milk and stir.
Allow the Golden Saffron to infuse without bringing the milk to boil for 2 minutes before serving. Add sugar or your choice of natural sweetener to taste.
