We’ve been championing natural and organic haircare since 2008, and over the years, we’ve learned that the transition can be a little different for everyone. If you’ve been using conventional hair products for years - especially those with silicones, sulphates, and synthetic fragrances - your hair may need a little time (and a little TLC) to adjust.
Here are our three tips to make the switch as smooth as possible.
1. Start with a Clean Slate
If your current products contain silicones, you may have a build-up on your hair and scalp that’s preventing moisture and key ingredients from doing their job. A scalp scrub with natural particles like sugar, or an exfoliating shampoo or mask containing charcoal, is a great way to reset.
Charcoal naturally attracts and removes impurities in a process called adsorption (not to be confused with absorption). Due to its porous structure and negative electrical charge, it naturally attracts and binds to positively charged molecules to help remove impurities from the body and hair. While gentle scrubs work as a physical mechanism to loosen and lift away residue.
You don’t need to use these products daily - once or twice a week initially to keep your scalp fresh and receptive to your new routine.
Try These:
- Less Is More Exfoliating Shampoo
- Innersense Detox Hair Mask
- John Masters Scalp Exfoliating Scrub
- Boucleme Scalp Exfoliating Shampo
2. Try the Double Shampoo Method
Most natural shampoos are sulphate-free, which means they cleanse gently without the stronger foaming agents you might be used to. This is great for your scalp health, but you may find the lather feels different at first.
We recommend the double shampoo method:
- Use half your usual amount for the first wash, concentrating on the scalp to break down surface oils and impurities.
- For the second wash, apply the remaining amount and work through both the scalp and lengths. You’ll notice a richer, more satisfying foam on the second go.
- Rinse and continue with your routine.
Try These Shampoos
- For Dry Hair - Innersense Hydrating Shampoo
- For Soothing The Scalp - Less Is More Herbal Scalp Relief Shampoo
- For Hair Loss - Megi Wellness Growth Stimulating Shampoo
- For Shine - Twelve Prebiotic Natural Shine Shampoo
- For Volume - Rahua Voluminous Shampoo
3. Give It Time – Your Hair Is Adjusting
One of the biggest mistakes people make is giving up too soon. Natural haircare doesn’t include the silicones, synthetic smoothers, or intense artificial fragrances that can give instant - but temporary - results.
Instead, these formulas rely on plant-based oils and botanical extracts for lasting benefits. For example, crambe abyssinica seed oil delivers a silky finish similar to silicones.
Your hair might feel different at first, but give it a few weeks to rebalance. You’re not just styling your hair - you’re improving its long-term health.
Extra Tips:
- Really Soak The Hair Before Washing: It sounds obvious but many of us don't actually wet the hair enough before starting - natural products work best on very wet hair.
- Condition Before You Wash: If your hair is prone to dryness, try applying a small amount of conditioner or hair oil to the ends before shampooing for extra protection.
- Lower the Heat: Heat styling can undo many of the benefits of natural haircare. Keep tools on a low to medium setting and always use a natural heat protectant like the Less Is More Earl Grey Blow Dry Spray.
- Stay Consistent: The longer you stick with natural haircare products, the better your results will be.
