Your Skin Is Your Largest Organ: How To Choose Natural Body Care

We choose body care with as much care as your face serum. Here's how to shop by ethos, what to...

Your skin is your largest organ, and the skin on your body deserves the same care you give your face. Yet body care is often an afterthought: whatever's on offer, picked up quickly, with little thought for what's inside. At CONTENT, we choose body products the way we choose the serum you use on your face. We look at what goes in, where it's made and what it comes in.

Here's how to do the same: shop by the values that matter to you, learn what to look for on the label, and build a simple ritual that leaves skin soft, comfortable and cared for.

Why Natural Body Care Matters

Body skin covers a lot of ground, and it works hard. It's exposed to hot showers, central heating, clothing and changing seasons, and it can lose moisture quickly, especially on the arms, legs and hips. The products you use every day, from shower wash to body oil, stay in contact with that skin for hours.

That's why it pays to choose well. Formulas built on plant oils and butters help skin hold on to moisture and provide antioxidants and vitamins (rather than just form a film on the skin), while gentle cleansers clean without leaving skin feeling tight.

Shop By Ethos

Everyone has different priorities. Some people need fragrance-free formulas for sensitive skin; others want certified organic ingredients or plastic-free packaging. Choose body care by the values that matter to you. Look for our ethos badges on every product page, or use the menu filters to shop by:

  • Fragrance free - formulas with no added scent, a good starting point for sensitive skin. Many products are also synthetic fragrance free, with essential oils as fragrance.
  • Certified organic - products formulated from organically grown natural ingredients (to a specified percentage) and processed to independently verified organic standards.
  • Certified natural - formulas checked by an independent body for their natural origin.
  • Vegan - no animal-derived ingredients, such as beeswax or lanolin.
  • Gluten free - formulated without gluten-containing ingredients.
  • Made in the UK - British brands, often small-batch and handmade.
  • Glass packaging - recyclable glass instead of single-use plastic.

Read The Label: Skip & Choose

The front of a bottle tells you how a product wants to be seen. The back tells you what's actually in it. Here's what to look for on the label when you're shopping natural body care.

Skip Choose
Mineral oil and petrolatum
They sit on top of skin as a film: softening, but they don't add antioxidants.
Jojoba, argan, shea and sunflower
Rich in fatty acids and antioxidants like vitamin E.
Silicones (-cone, -siloxane)
They give an instant silky feel but add nothing for skin.
Light plant oils
For a smooth, silky finish that sinks in rather than sitting on top.
Mystery "parfum"
One word can hide a whole blend.
Essential oils, or fragrance-free
Find brands that tell you where their scent comes from.
SLS
A foaming agent that can strip skin's natural oils and leave it feeling tight and dry.
Gentle plant-based cleansers
Like coco glucoside, or creamy, oil-rich washes and bars.

A simple rule of thumb: ingredients are listed in order of quantity, so the first five tell you most of what you're putting on your skin.

Mirror Water natural body care

A Natural Body Ritual

Five steps, from dry brush to final spritz. You don't need to do all five every day: save the brush and scrub for a slower Sunday, and keep the wash and oil for every day.

1. Brush: Mirror Water Buff Body Dry Brush - Before your shower, brush dry skin in long upward strokes towards your heart. It wakes up your skin and gets it ready for everything that follows.

2. Scrub: UpCircle Lemongrass Body Scrub - Once or twice a week, massage the scrub over damp skin in the shower to buff away dullness.

3. Wash: Weleda Skin Food Shower Cream - A rich, creamy wash that cleans without leaving your skin feeling tight.

4. Oil: Inlight Firm & Tone Body Oil - Pat yourself half dry, then press the oil into skin that's still damp so it locks in moisture.

5. Mist: Weleda Body & Hair Fragrance Mist - The finishing touch. Choose Tropical Crush, Vanilla Cloud or Mystic Aura.

FAQ

Is natural body care as effective as conventional products?

Going natural no longer means a compromise on results. Plant oils and butters soften and nourish skin, and many natural formulas now match conventional textures, from fast-absorbing lotions to rich balms.

What's the difference between clean beauty and certified organic/natural?

We class "clean beauty" as products that exclude certain ingredients, whereas "natural" describes where ingredients come from - plants, resins, waxes etc. "Certified" means an independent body has verified how those natural ingredients were grown, processed packaged and the finished products environmental impact. Look for the certification on the label, or our certified organic (or natural) badge on the product page.

I have sensitive skin. Where should I start?

Start with fragrance-free formulas and a gentle, oil-rich cleanser, and introduce one new product at a time. If you're unsure, patch test on a small area first.

How often should I exfoliate my body?

Once or twice a week is enough for most skin. Dry brushing is gentler and can be done more often, before you shower. Always brush towards the heart.
